Varieties – Flower Thrower

May 1968 was a turbulent month. In Paris, students set up barricades and fought street battles with the police. Bruno Barbey, on the road in Paris as a photographer for the Magnum agency, takes a famous photo on the Boulevard Saint Germain, which later becomes the source of inspiration for the „Flower Thrower“, probably the best known work of the street artist BANKSY.
In BANKSY’s work, a stone-throwing student becomes a masked man throwing a bouquet of flowers. It is one of Banksy’s most recognisable images and one that has been widely appropriated. Over the years, both my Berlin friend and I have come across several variations of this work of art.

Uhlandstraße – Moabit

Trips to Moabit have been rare lately, but the gym on Uhlandstraße is always worth a visit. On his visit there recently, my Berlin friend found a number of beautiful works. Among them was a portrait of the Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka. Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the artists.

Gretl Wall – We will stay together till its ending

Another Gretl wall was done, this time it was splitted between the two Berlin based graffiti cracks CARO PEPE & WESR and a number of street artists who have made a collage of solidarity with a feministic touch.

Indiana Jones Forever

Since 1981, Harrison Ford has been searching for treasures in the most remote places of the world as the adventurer Indiana Jones. Some heroes just can’t be killed! Today the latest blockbuster from this series opens in German cinemas. A good reason to take a look at Harrison Ford, also known as Han Solo in the Star Wars series.

Who did it? – A Swiss!

The pictures in this post do not come directly from my Berlin friend’s camera this time. Unfortunately, the wall was already painted over when he found out about it. With the kind permission of URBAN_STREETART_BERLIN, my Berlin friend sent me the photos. Thanks for letting me show them here; but even more thanks to Switzerland, where the artist Salem Jajovski aka @vice.suaze lives and works. Thanks for this gift!

The Masked Singer – Berlin vs. Essen

The word is out: the pandemic has been declared over. Other issues are now on the agenda. The TV programme has not got any better, but there are still constants you can rely on: They are dressing up again and they are also performing again, more or less skilfully. Last Saturday, a new season of „The Masked Singer“ has begun. My Berlin friend and I compete to find pieces in street art and graffiti that correspond to the masks. A total of 9 masks are to be guessed in the new season; last Saturday Jan Josef Liefers was already unmasked as the kangaroo.

A toast also plays a role this time, but – let’s be honest – the closest thing to this mask is probably SpongBob, who, as a well-known comic figure, also appears in graffiti and street art. Toast no! But SpongeBob? Of course!
