Gretl Wall – Subway Riders

Anyone who rides the subway, whether in New York, London, Paris, Berlin or wherever, will know them. Obscure characters with often strange quirks with whom you avoid eye contact and, if possible, keep your distance. The imaginative passengers in Talissa Mehringer’s underground, however, are strange, monstrous, but friendly and quite interesting as travel companions.

New upcoming star in the Berlin graffiti sky

Yes sure, these are big words, but look at these strong colours and this extraordinary style! You won’t find anything like this in the Berlin graffiti universe. This newcomer hasn’t been on a wall for long, so these are first tentative steps, but my Berlin friend and I immediately fell in love with these pieces. The tag of this artist is ABLIN and we hope to find more of those works.

Tanks of resistance

The debate about the delivery of heavy tanks to Ukraine has been making waves, and not only in Europe. The German government’s position is hesitant and unclear, which is why there is now support from Berlin and Essen in a kind of private initiative. My friend from Berlin and I have asked around in artistic circles and have collected a number of tanks that are ready for immediate use.

Quintessenz & KERA at Warschauer Sraße S

Berlin is in a constant state of flux, which is not only noticeable in the area around Warschauer Straße S-Bahn station, where a newly built high-rise has grown into the sky, making it hard to find your way around. Recently, the station was designed by Tomislav Topic (Quintessenz) and KERA. Deutsche Bahn has given the artists one hundred percent freedom of design; And so one of the busiest places in berlin has got a new Face.

These days you meet strange figures in Berlin. Do you know the Moomins? These lovable, HIPPO-like characters with kissing mouth were invented by the Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson. Sweeties, But they are all Trolls. My Berlin friend met them at Dircksenstraße.

SUNDAY OF THE DEAD

November is the month of remembrance. It traditionally ends with today’s Sunday of the Dead, on which the deceased have been commemorated since the beginning of the 19th century. A quiet day of remembrance on which cheerful and noisy events are unwelcome.

Of course, my Berlin friend and I have our own way of dealing with this day. We are interested in the way artists deal with the many losses that life brings with it. Grief always feels the same, no matter who you have lost.

The November design of Gretl Wall refers to the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian woman who died on 16 September 2022 in a hospital in Tehran, Iran under suspicious circumstances. the slogan was used by protestors globally.

The only stupid thing is that the Instagram profiles of both PRIZMU and FCKWRS contradict this! FCKWRS statement: This is not PRIZMU! Prizmu’s statement: Follow my Bro @fckwrs. A red herring? – probably…

Until now, I assumed, as did my friend from Berlin, that FUCK WARS was a statement, and so we always attributed so titled works to PRIZMU. That seems to be wrong. Whether it is a matter of friendship, or family ties, is unclear, but it seems to be a matter of two different actors. Only one thing is clear: it is almost impossible to separate the two, so here is a selection of the pieces we have collected over the last years and a few new finds by my Berlin friend, which he made during one of his excursions to Kastanienallee.

News due to Dircksenstraße

Just a few days ago, my Berlin friend took a look around Dircksenstraße and brought back a few new pieces from STICKERMAID. As expected, of course, there is also a new round in the game STICKERMAID vs. impudent thief – because this is a never ending story! I have long since given up counting the number of stolen heads in this collabo between STICKERMAID, PLANET SELFIE and SOSCHÖN.

A side note: the artist’s sticker packs are not prohibitively expensive and clearly help keeping her studio warm in these difficult times!
